LET WHEELHOUSE HELP WITH YOUR CARD GRADING

WHAT IS CARD GRADING?

Card grading has become very popular within the hobby as more and more collectors seek to have the cards in their collections evaluated or graded. To have a card “graded” means that a third-party grading/authentication service will evaluate your cards based on different factors, namely: corner sharpness, condition of the card’s edges and surface, design or image centering and overall eye appeal. A card is given an overall grade from 1 to 10 when all these factors are considered. A grade of 10 is labeled “Gem Mint” and means the card is essentially perfect in the opinion of the grader. There exist many companies that claim to perform grading services, however, the three broadly recognized grading firms in the market are Professional Sports Authenticator(PSA), Beckett Grading Services (BGS) and SGC, formerly referred to as Sports Card Guaranty Corporation. There are features and benefits of each of these firms and it may make more sense to submit a certain type of card to one grader versus another. Wheelhouse can assist with these decisions and is an authorized dealer for PSA and SGC. Working with an in-market authorized dealer is preferable from an expertise, trust and reliability standpoint as dealers need to maintain the strict standards of the grading companies they represent. Never entrust your cards to an unauthorized dealer. You can view the PSA dealer directory here.

WHY GRADE YOUR CARDS?

Simply put, card grading helps to protect and preserve your collection and makes finalizing a sale or auction transaction much easier.  When a card is ungraded, a seller may claim that the card is in mint condition while the buyer could claim that the card is in near mint condition.  Depending on the card, this difference of opinion could prevent a sale from being completed as there may be a discrepancy of several hundred – or even several thousand – dollars in value between those two conditions.  Grading largely eliminates this difference of opinion from the transaction. Graded card valuation is easy to reference online or through auction and sale aggregation apps.  You can also reference the populations of specific graded cards online.  For instance, there are only three PSA 10 Gem Mint graded 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle cards, but there are six PSA 9 unqualified Mint graded cards and only one SGC 9.5 Mint+ graded card currently in circulation. Once a card is graded, it need not be removed from its protective case, also known as a “slab.”

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Seven days a week, Wheelhouse is available to answer specific questions about grading your sports and trading cards.  Not every card is suitable for grading, either from a condition or value standpoint, and a brief consultation can help in this decision making.  Submissions begin under $20 plus a small shipping fee.  Cards can be dropped off or mailed to our central mailbox, and once returned can be picked up at any Wheelhouse location or mailed anywhere within the United States.  Wheelhouse has no minimums or maximums on cards submitted, offers a free card cleaning and review service, and collects payment only at the end of the grading process.
