Card grading has become very popular within the hobby as more and more collectors seek to have the cards in their collections evaluated or graded. To have a card “graded” means that a third-party grading/authentication service will evaluate your cards based on different factors, namely: corner sharpness, condition of the card’s edges and surface, design or image centering and overall eye appeal. A card is given an overall grade from 1 to 10 when all these factors are considered. A grade of 10 is labeled “Gem Mint” and means the card is essentially perfect in the opinion of the grader. There exist many companies that claim to perform grading services, however, the three broadly recognized grading firms in the market are Professional Sports Authenticator(PSA), Beckett Grading Services (BGS) and SGC, formerly referred to as Sports Card Guaranty Corporation. There are features and benefits of each of these firms and it may make more sense to submit a certain type of card to one grader versus another.
